The US Air Force played a major role in Europe after they entered the war following the bombing of Pearl Harbour.

--

One of their key aircraft was the P47D Thunderbolt or to give it its proper title Republic P47D Thunderbolt. It is the heaviest and largest fighter aircraft in history to be powered by a 4-stroke internal combustion engine. Taking its first flight on 6th May 1941, the Thunderbolt was nicknamed The Jug by its pilots and served successfully in all theatres of the conflict.
